Daily Format / What to Expect
1. Daily Quote (or journal) Each day, we begin with a quote which is posted on the board. You are to begin class by copying the quote into your notebook and putting your own "spin" on what the quote says. Some days, we will extend this activity into a longer journal prompt. This activity is meant to help all of us transition from the business of the day and other classes into our class, turning our focus toward exploring the beauty and meaning of language and expression. The quote will be posted on the class website, so that you can stay on track with our class if you have to miss class. 2. Daily Grammar Following the quote, we will complete a short grammar exercise (also in notebooks), which is designed to serve as a review of grammatical skills. This is meant to help us move toward perfecting our writing by reviewing necessary language tools. As with our daily quotes, daily grammar will be posted to the class website. 3. Vocabulary Each day, we will spend time reviewing and exploring new literary terms and vocabulary which pertains to our unit of study or text we are exploring at the time. New vocabulary sets will be posted to our website. 4. Reading/Literature/Writing - individual, groups, whole class This is the "meat" of what we will do each day. For the bulk of our class time together, we will be exploring different texts including but not limited to world literature, personal narratives, informational texts, and even artwork and videos. We have many "goals" here, but my overarching goal is for you to develop and celebrate your own "voice" through writing and to learn to appreciate and value the other unique voices of others. It is so important that you know that you have a story to tell, a unique voice, and that it matters. Cheers to what I know will be a wonderful year together! Ms. Howes
